LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - Students at one local elementary school got to get some exercise that also helps the brain Thursday.
The Move to Learn Initiative came to Northeast Lauderdale Elementary School, providing the opportunity for students to learn simple movement exercises that are meant to help clear the mind and improve focus. Coach Larry Calhoun led the demonstration and says that it’s important to keep kids moving throughout the day with these 'brain breaks.”
“To any children who have any behavior challenge, it’s a way of kind of re-directing some of those behavior challenges," Calhoun says. "And it’s a fun way to encourage children to associate movement with something positive, and not something punitive, and we all know the human body was meant for movement.”
The Move to Learn Initiative is a collaborative effort by the Bower Foundation and the Mississippi Department of Education. You can find more information on their website www.movetolearnms.org.
“At the end of the day, it’s about encouraging children to be excited about learning, and to see learning as an opportunity to grow in a happy, joyful, and fulfilled environment,”
