NAS Meridian hosts 9/11 ceremony

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - 18 years after the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, we still grieve for the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001 and the many others who are still being affected by that tragedy.

Naval Air Station Meridian held a special 9/11 ceremony this morning in remembrance of that important date in history.

18 years ago William Johnson was stationed in Maryland, 25 minutes away from where one of the hijacked planes was supposed to hit next.

He addressed the crowd at NAS Meridian this morning.

"Our 9/11 looks different in the future," said Johnson. "There's going to be something, it may be real big or real small, something happens and we should always be ready to respond."

Some sailors and Marines in attendance were born the same year 9/11 happened.

One young marine told Newscenter 11 he finds it important to take the time to learn about big moments in America's history like this while learning to defend the country.
