New business opens Tuesday in De Kalb
Pastor Samuel Merriweather is opening a beauty supply store on Highway-16 West in DeKalb.
“They don’t have a beauty supply store in DeKalb and the people in DeKalb, and Macon, and Scooba, they all come to Meridian for some beauty supplies, so DeKalb will be a perfect place to open up a beauty supply to cut down the travelling,” Merriweather says. “It will just be a nice thing to do for the city of DeKalb.”
A new pharmacy will also open soon. Proxsys Rx, will replace Fred’s Pharmacy which is now closed. The Kemper County Economic Development Authority executive director Craig Hitt says the pharmacy could open within the next week to 10 days.
“[Proxsys Rx] will be in the building that Fred’s was in,” Hitt says. “So it will be in the familiar location and they’re hiring some of the same pharmacists that Fred’s had, so our local folks will go to the same building and talk some of the same folks when they are getting their prescriptions filled.”
There are also two sites that are planned to be used for industrial development. One is a 215 acre site called the Kemper Crossing located at the intersection of Highway’s 16 and 397. The other is located at the old Weyerhaeuser’s site next to Highway-45. There has already been interest in the Highway-45 site.
“We actually had a meeting last week with a company that’s trying to put together a package and if it all works out they’re interested in that site. We’re hoping that within the next couple of months that could develop for us,” Hitt says. “It’s an exciting time for us in Kemper County as we’ve got some activity, and it’s good that we’ve got some folks that are looking at us and we hope to continue to grow and have these opportunities.”
The Merriweathers Beauty Supply shop will have its grand opening December 3 at 9 a.m. The regular business hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday’s.
