MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - This week is known as National Police Week around the United States.

Everyday thousands of law enforcement officers put on a badge and go on patrol, risking their lives to protect the citizens. Many of those officers don't get the opportunity to make it back home.

All week long those officers will be remembered as current, on-duty personnel will be thanked for all they do to protect the community on a daily basis.

“Mississippi is starting to see more and more officers injured in the line of duty. In the last few years we have had several officers that have lost their lives protecting the citizens of the state of Mississippi,” Sheriff Billy Sollie says.

Between the Meridian Police Department and the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department, a total of five law enforcement personnel and one K9 officer have died while on duty.
