The University of Mississippi is creating a panel to examine whether the university should provide more context about historic campus sites and buildings.

The Oxford Eagle reports the committee is being formed in response to recent events concerning Confederate symbols on campus. The university has removed the Mississippi state flag, which includes the Confederate battle flag emblem.

University Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter announced the creation of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on History and Contextualization on Thursday.

Vitter made the announcement in a campus-wide letter to students, faculty and alumni.

The chancellor said the committee will determine which sites should be given historic contextualization.

The panel will meet for the first time on Aug. 16.
