Parkview Elementary students learn through storytelling
Students at Parkview Elementary School got to learn about English Language Arts through drama and storytelling Friday morning.
Teaching Artist Terrence Roberts told the story of 'Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters', which is a South African version of the Cinderella story. After Roberts was done telling the story, the students had the opportunity to imagine themselves inside the story and act it out.
“We are wired to learn by story, and so when we use the arts, and specifically storytelling and drama, kids can get a better understanding both of the stories that they’re working on, but they get a chance to walk inside of it," Roberts says. "[They work better with] character development, they work better with fluency; everything that they want to gain as a student in language arts can be accomplished using stories and storytelling.”
The project was funded through the Any Given Child initiative.
