Pennington wins Newton County sheriff's race

DECATUR, Miss. (WTOK) - Republican candidate Joedy Pennington will be Newton County's next sheriff. He won the general election over Independent candidate Randy Patrick.

Pennington was joined by family and friends at his watch party as precinct results came in.

"The folks in Newton County showed me a lot of support in the general election and I couldn't be prouder of this county," said Pennington.

While running for sheriff, Pennington said he listened to local concerns and is now glad to be in the position to help.

"I think in anything you do there's always room for improvement so that's what we're going to do," said Pennington. "I made a lot of promises to the people in this county and I'm going to fulfill every one of them."

Pennington has worked as Decatur's chief of police for the last 15 years and said that experience will help with his future position as sheriff.

Current sheriff, Jackie Knight, did not run for reelection.
