The Philadelphia Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own Saturday morning. An officer with the Philadelphia Police Department was killed in a one vehicle wreck in Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

The wreck happened shortly after 2 am on West Beacon Street.

Philadelphia Police Chief Grant Myers said 23-year-old Officer Leann Simpson passed away.

“Sheriff’s Deputies were on a traffic stop on Hwy 16 and communications could not make contact with the deputies, Communications requested Philadelphia Police units to check on them. Officer Simpson was responding to the call,” stated Myers.

Simpson’s patrol car flipped several times before hitting a light pole. The cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

Officer Simpson had been with the Philadelphia Police Department for 15 months.
