MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- Local scouts were off to the races as they geared up for their annual pinewood derby.
The 20th annual Pinewood Derby was held at Bonita Lakes Mall, Saturday. With the help of Parents, Scouts build their own cars from pine wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. Over 100 scouts then competed in a race against each other. The Pinewood Debry brings cubs from six different counties together to race is their custom hand made cars. Organization leaders with the boy scouts describes how the process of the derby helps to instill core values as young men.
"I think this is a very important program. It a great way to get your kids back involved with other kids as well as the community. This is meant to help bring kids up right, learn about responsibility, family, God, the community, and country," says Pack 29 Cub Master, Mike Brown.
Organizers say that this is a community effort and learning experience that many people look forward to every year. Trophies were handed out based on each racers’ final placing and car design.
