MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Wednesday night's murder marks the third shooting death in Meridian since the start of 2018. The deadly shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 4600 Block of Manning Court. Sergeant Dareall Thompson says the department is still gathering information on suspects and a possible motive.
"We are trying to talk to anyone that was out there and maybe saw what happened, or what led up to the shooting. We are still trying to find out what was the motive. But our investigators went back out this morning to see if we could collect more evidence. But at this point it's still an ongoing investigation," said Sergeant Dareall Thompson.
The Police Department does believe that the shooter and victim knew each other. But authorities are relying on help from the community to bring any and all possible suspects to justice.
"Unfortunately, this is something that we couldn't prevent. But we do rely on the community to call in any suspicious activity. But we are trying to determine the motive in this situation," said Sergeant Thompson.
The Sergeant confirms that gun-related crimes carry stiff penalties in the city. If found guilty, the culprits could face a long time behind bars.
"Based on the judge setting bonds so high, it may be kind of difficult for them to get back out in the community. And we're going to continue to do what we've been doing. Go out there, catch them, lock them up and the judge sets the bond on what he thinks fit," said Sergeant Thompson.
The name of the victim is not being released at this time until all immediate family is notified. If you have any information to help authorities, you are urged to contact MPD or call Crimestoppers.
