MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - With two apparent accidental shootings within the past seven days, the Meridian Police Department is calling on gun owners to rethink safety.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Percy Bland joined Chief Benny Dubose, Capt. John Griffith, Detective Sanders and Lt. Rita Jack to plead with the public about gun safety.
They say they do not want to work cases involving children accidentally shooting another child with a real gun. They stressed that gun safety should be a firearm owner's top priority, especially if children are in the home.
“Sometimes things can be prevented. This hurts all of us and not just the families. It also hurts police officers, community members and people like myself who have to get the call when things like this happens,” Bland says.
The Meridian Police Department has free gun locks available at the front desk. All you have to do is go to the Department on 22nd Avenue and request one.
