Rainy weather doesn't dampen State Games

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Stormy weather washed out Friday's opening ceremonies for the State Games of Mississippi, but officials say the weather hasn't put a damper on most of the games.

There haven't been many delays since competitors keep playing through the rain. They only have to stop for lightning. Organizers say the turnout has been incredible this year, and they're expecting a record-breaking number of participants.

"We've grown with four new sports this year, and we've had hundreds more participants. And I really expect our numbers to be over six thousand this year," organizer Krilecia Gianakos says. "I can't wait to see how it turns out."

Athletes showed off their skills in sports like soccer, volleyball and swimming over the weekend. The best of the best will go head to head in more competitions this week, which features stickball, marksmanship and cycling.
