GULFPORT, Miss. (WTOK) - The Southeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross says Pearl River, Forrest and Jones counties have put shelters in Poplarville, Hattiesburg and Laurel on standby.

The Red Cross has pre-staged personnel, snacks and supplies to be ready to open these shelters on orders of the county emergency manager, if necessary.

Tropical Storm Barry is expected to land in Louisiana as a Category 1 hurricane. The primary danger to Mississippi is heavy rain and flooding, especially along the western part of the Mississippi Coast and the Mississippi Delta area.

Hancock County emergency management will have a shelter in Kiln as of 4 p.m. Friday. Other shelters in southwest and north Mississippi also remain on standby, if needed.
