Residents search for unclaimed property

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Residents filled the Board of Supervisors room for the unclaimed property event Thursday afternoon.

Unclaimed property can include a number of items that residents are unaware of that belong to them. This includes money, checks or stocks that have been abandoned with no contact for a period of five years.

Thursday, the event drew more than just residents. State Treasurer David McRae stopped by to discuss the importance of getting these items to their rightful owners.

“On average, the average person gets $1,500 to $2,100 per claim. That’s something we are very proud of. It’s something I think people need to look at the website or come to the annex to see if they have it,” McRae explains. “One lady we talked to says she is going to pay off her car note with it. Another person is paying off their student loan with it. This is something great that the state of Mississippi can give back to the people of Mississippi what they’re rightfully owed.”
