MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Lecile Harris, the famous rodeo clown has died. Many of our viewers grew up watching Lecile perform his act at the Ralph Morgan Rodeo.

He’d paint smiles on the faces of children and adults alike with every performance.

Harris cared about the rodeo community and everyone who attended. Many might remember the dance competitions he would have with the children that always brought about a boisterous laugh.

In recent years Harris wrote about his life as a bull rider turned comedic rodeo performer in a book called, ‘Lecile: This Ain’t My First Rodeo.’

Harris died in his sleep following a performance Wednesday at the 55th Annual Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson. He was part of all eight shows. He was 83.

The Ralph Morgan family put out a statement on Harris’ passing:

“Lecile Harris, the world renowned rodeo cowboy, died in his sleep last night after performing eight times at the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, the largest east of the Mississippi River. Rodeo was Lecile’s life. It started a long time ago and he loved it. He was loved by thousands of people and we would like to ask for prayers at this time. This is a hard time especially after the recent loss of Mrs. Lib (Ralph) Morgan in January.”

Harris was a member of the Mississippi Rodeo Hall of Fame and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Hall of Fame and was PRCA Clown of the Year four times. He also performed on the classic TV show Hee Haw for five years.
