Rolling up her sleeves: Brenda Vowell

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (WTOK) - Each month, we shine the spotlight on one person who goes above and beyond to make a difference in our Eleven Who Care series. This month, we traveled to Neshoba County, where one woman says it's her mission to help children.

From their heads to their toes, Brenda Vowell is helping to make sure kids in Neshoba County have what they need.

"Our main goal is to provide a good feeling for the children of Neshoba County that they're dressed well," she says.

She says that idea started years ago when the former pastor at Vowell's church had a vision from God. He came to her with the plan to recycle uniforms for children to wear to school.

"He came personally to me and said, 'Will you head this up?' My mother was fighting cancer, and I couldn't do it then," Vowell explains. "So I said, 'Why don't you ask so-and-so?' And he never did."

But after her mother passed away, Vowell remembered that calling. So they began God's Closet as a way for the community to donate clothes for kids in need.

"We even have some grandmothers that cry because they're so excited that we're able to help," she says. "We've had fathers to say that y'all are a Godsend. And that's what it's all about. Showing God's love through what they need."

Five years later, the project has grown. Vowell works with a 10-person committee to manage God's Closet. They now serve about 650 kids in the area, thanks to a lot of support from the community. She says it's an effort that impacts them as much as it does the children, and they hope God's Closet will continue to help those in need.

"We're just going to keep on keeping on taking care of these children in Neshoba County," Vowell says.

God's Closet will be open for customers again July 8 for the next school year. They are accepting donations only every Tuesday from 9-12 in May. You can contact God's Closet at 601-663-5300 for more information on registration and donations.
