A new member was appointed to the Meridian Public School District Board at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Meridian Housing Authority Executive Director Ron Turner was appointed by the mayor and approved by the council for the position recently vacated by Rev. Gary Houston.

Turner told the council he has had four children go through the public school system and that he has dedicated many years to this community and helping the public schools in various capacities.

Turner says he hopes to bring ideas and ways to actively motivate the youth and promote success.

Council members expressed their concerns for the school system. Ward 1 Councilman Dr. George Thomas said, “I want our schools to do better.” Other council members said they just want the district to perform better and hope Turner will help in that process.

The vote was four to one with Ward 4 Councilwoman Kim Houston voting against Turner being appointed. Councilwoman Houston is the wife of Rev. Houston, who held the position Turner will now fill.

Turner is also the PA announcer for varsity basketball at Meridian High School.
