For Rose, the United States Naval Academy is a dream school. When she found out Sen, Roger Wicker nominated her to attend, she was at a loss for words.

“I was at my grandmother’s house and I just so happened to check my portal and I saw that I got the nomination, which is just one step closer, and i was ecstatic,” Rose said.

Over the last year and a half Rose’s love for flying has grown. She’s currently class president and a cross fit trainer but says the naval academy can help add fighter pilot to that list.

“I want to be a Marine Corps officer. I would like to be in the aviation community, if not a pilot, then NFO, which is a naval flight officer,” said Rose.

Naval Academy recruitment officer, David Carter, says he’s always ready to help students like Piper who are interested in the academy.

“The mission of the naval academy is to produce leaders," Carter said. "People think it’s to produce officers in the military. It’s to produce leaders. Leaders either in the military, the civilian world, the government.”

First Lt. Jude Ampolini graduated from the academy and says he’s rooting for rose.

“I think it’s pretty cool. It’s cool to see that people still want to go," said Ampolini. "It was a great school. I had a great time and met really good friends there.”

“I’m extremely happy to have the opportunity to be a part of something like this,” said Rose.

Carter will be talking to local students interested in the Naval Academy Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Meridian Public Library.
