Sailors honored at annual AC2 Whitney L. Powell Memorial Military Citizen of the Year Awards
Some special sailors were honored Thursday afternoon at the AC2 Whitney L. Powell Memorial Military Citizen of the Year Awards ceremony.
The award honors enlisted military members who dedicate much of their personal time to community service while stationed at NAS Meridian.
A luncheon sponsored by the Mississippi Council of the Navy League and East Mississippi Business Development Corporation was held at Weidmann’s downtown to recognize nominees.
This year’s winner was Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Patrick Kiger. He's been stationed in Meridian for the past two years and previously was here from 2010-2014.
"I honestly didn't think it was going to happen. I don't volunteer for awards, I volunteer because I enjoy giving back to the community."
Kiger is also a volunteer firefighter with the Russell Fire Department. He played a pivotal role in Meridian's Local Fleet Reserve Association Chapter 264.
The other two nominees were Logistics Specialist 1st Class Jason Leyva and Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Dakota Neel.
