MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Tax free weekend is underway in Mississippi and local stores are preparing for the influx of shoppers vying for a good deal.
“We are cramming as much as we can in every spot in the store to make sure it is available for the customers,” explained Josh Sanders, General Manager of J.C. Penny at Bonita Lakes Mall.
Certain clothing and shoe items totaling under $100 dollars will be free from the 7% tax levied by the state and some stores are also adding additional sales to give more bang for the customers buck.
“We have door busters that start today at three and go through one o’clock Saturday which is great deals on school uniforms and things that they will need for back to school,” said Sanders.
With Bonita Lakes Mall drawing customers from across the twin states, leaders with JCPenney say you can expect some lines during peak hours, but give advice to those wanting to beat the crowds.
“Typically to beat the rush is to be at the door when the store opens,” said Sanders. “We have followed our mall opening hours for tax free weekend, we will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, I would say that would be the easiest way to get in and out and out is to be here when we open.”
The tax free weekend is a win-win for both shoppers and stores, by bringing revenue to retailers before the holiday shopping season and adding a few extra bucks back into the wallets of customers.
“The biggest thing is that we have the apparel for them and we have the staffing here to make sure they get what they need in a timely manner and we look forward to seeing them,” said Sanders.
Tax free weekend ends at midnight on Sunday.
