MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - SkyWest is partnering with United Airlines to provide Meridian’s air service, beginning July 1, 2020, with two daily flights to Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport.
“SkyWest who provides our service in Meridian looked for a new partner and immediately found a very willing United Airlines who wanted to be in Meridian and we are really excited United will be coming," said Meridian Airport Authority President Tom Williams.
Tickets go on sale Saturday, Apr. 11, through the United Airlines website.
According to the city of Meridian, the Meridian Airport Authority commissioned a study in 2018 to evaluate whether a move to United Airlines would benefit the city.
In early March, SkyWest notified MAA that American Airlines had reached a threshold with its pilot contract that required them to reduce or eliminate service to nearly a dozen communities in the U.S., including Meridian. SkyWest then approached United Airlines and both agreed to partner with Meridian.
“The City of Meridian is excited to have United Airlines and their global network serving our area,” said Mayor Percy Bland. "We look forward to helping SkyWest grow the United brand in Mississippi.”
The airport authority says Houston has a great on-time performance.
Meridian Mayor Percy Bland says flights to Chicago may be offered in the future as another option to this exciting new partnership.
“After all this stuff with the virus is over, we are going to start trying to speak to them about possibly going back to Chicago O'Hare as well," said Bland.
Meridian Airport Authority released a statement Thursday, saying it's grateful for the role SkyWest played in making sure service continued for the east Mississippi area.
MAA says United Airlines normally operates 407 daily flights connecting passengers to the world from Houston. It says Houston has better on-time performance than Dallas, and the aircraft for the flights will be housed in Meridian overnight, a real plus. The airport points out there is a Houston to Dallas connection through United Airlines.
