Small Business Saturday helps people shop local

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - One of the busiest shopping weekends in the country continued Saturday with Small Business Saturday.

Some businesses extended their Black Friday deals for the local shopping day. Small businesses are an essential part of cities in the magnolia state, so going to shop there, or any other day of the year, impacts the whole community. Brand New You boutique is a new shop in Meridian. Owners say this shopping holiday is a great way to get community members off the online box stores and into local shops.

"Small business Saturday is really important because so many people this weekend stay at home in their pjs and order everything online. They don't think about how that effects their community. We are the backbone of the local economy so investing in a small business, coming and doing your Christmas shopping with us, is really investing in your community,” says owner Connie Brand.

Small Business Saturday was created by American Express to help grow local economies.
