Special Olympics kicks off bowling competition

MERIDIAN, Miss (WTOK) - Family Bowl Lanes was packed with competitors Friday for the start of a 3-day event for Area 5 Special Olympics.

Area 5 covers Lauderdale, Kemper, Newton and Clarke counties.

Katie Bergin, volunteer area director, organized the event.

"I train a couple of different athletes that are adaptive athletes. And it was kind of a natural fit when they asked me. It was just something I couldn't turn down," said Bergin.

Bergin says these special needs athletes deserve a chance to show off their skills and be a part of sports, just as much as any other child.

"They just want an opportunity to play sports like every other kid. So if we can provide that, and then of course, provide something for those kids as they get out of high school, then we need to. Any chance they can be active and get outside their walls is great," said Bergin.

This year, because it was so cold, everyone decided to bring the Special Olympics inside. Bergin hopes in the spring it will be warm enough for outdoor sports, like track and field.
