It was a special birthday surprise for a Former 2nd Lieutenant Marine here in Meridian.

Harry Little turned 85 this month. He served in Vietnam back in 1958 and was honored Monday morning during a flag pole raising that was presented by VFW Post 12124, the Patriot Guard & members of the Chunky River Hog Group.

Little says he was grateful to be honored by other military heroes.

"See I'm 85 years old. These boys ain’t even caught up with me yet. But you're looking around at heroes. You don't see this much. And when people talk about our country they need to see this don't they,” says Little.

But his fellow veterans say the real heroes are the ones who gave their lives for this country.

"A lot of us served. Mr. Little is calling us veterans heroes, well we're not heroes. The heroes unfortunately came home in body bags or never came home, those are the real heroes. The rest of us that served, some of us had it easy some of us had it tough,” says Commander Marty McCann of VFW Post 12124.

A Marine Corps flag will also be placed under the American flag at the post. Little also served as a teacher at Meridian High for over 30 years and is the step father to Susan Akin, who won Miss America in 1986.
