MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian Council for the Arts is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and its mission is to encourage and to promote performance and appreciation of the arts.

A Monday program brought the Lagniappe Trio to town, musicians from Mississippi and Louisiana who play a variety of instruments including the harp, viola and flute.

"All of our classes use the arts to teach content," said Zachari Ruff, choir director at Northwest Middle School. "So for our students they really get to show their teachers and each other, if they can't answer a question because they didn't take notes, they can act if out or they can sing a song or create a rap so that's something that the arts help our students show that they do understand the things. They may not be able, you know every student is not a 'take notes answer question' type of student."

The Lagniappe Trio also performed shows for Lamar, Southeast, Clarkdale and West Hills students.
