8/11/19 - Rain coverage Sunday was limited to the Pine Belt region of the state in the afternoon. Most of us saw highs near 96 with a heat index over 105. As we go through the overnight, we will see mostly clear skies with lows in the mid 70s.
Monday and Tuesday, it is going to be hot! I am expecting highs around 98-99 with some areas reaching 100. Because a ridge of high pressure will build over the area from the west, we will see very limited rain coverage. A brief pop-up shower is possible, but would be more likely the farther east you go into Alabama. A heat advisory will go into effect Monday morning at 10am, lasting until 9pm. The heat advisory will be extended into Tuesday evening as well. Heat index values could be near 110 during the afternoon hours.
Remember these heat safety tips: Limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activities during peak heating hours, take frequent breaks if you have to be outdoors for a timely period, drink plenty of water (even if not thirsty) and wear light colored clothing. Don't forget to take care of your pets! Bring them indoors or in the shade, as well as make sure they have plenty of water. Check on your neighbors as well.
Relief if on the way Wednesday! A cold front will move through East Mississippi and West Alabama during the day Wednesday. The front will bring increased rain coverage, as well as drier air behind the front. Highs will still be in the 90s on Thursday, but will be much more comfortable with lows near 70. Northern counties may even see lows in the upper 60s.
