Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose says the suspect accused in the murder of former Meridian High and MSU football player Chris Smith has been taken into custody.

Police say Tirale Reed has been taken into custody. He is accused in the murder of the former Meridian High and Mississippi State football standout. Police named him as the suspect in the murder on Sunday.

"The investigation and the interviews of witnesses indicated that he was involved in the incident and that he did fire a weapon that led to the death of Mr. Smith," MPD Chief Benny Dubose says.

After police issued warrants for Reed's arrest, Chief Dubose says investigators spoke to Reed's family about how to move forward.

"Family members indicated that he wanted to turn himself in, but didn't know exactly how," he says.

He says they spoke to Reed, himself, Monday afternoon, who told them he was in Marietta, Georgia. Police asked him to stay at a business there and wait for authorities to take him into custody.

"At that point, we contacted Marietta police, and they arrived and picked up Mr. Reed without incident," the chief says.

Chief Dubose says Reed had his initial hearing in Georgia and signed his extradition papers to be returned to Meridian. The chief says Reed was eager to share his side of the story, and this arrest is only the start of what's to come.

"The process is really in the early stages, and until we interview Mr. Reed and get his side of the story, things may change, they might not," Chief Dubose says. "But the investigation is ongoing. It's by no means closed."

The warrants issued for Reed included murder, felon in possession of a firearm and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Chris Smith was shot and killed Friday night around 10:50 at Frank Berry Courts on 8th Street.

Reed is expected to be brought back from Georgia Wednesday.
