Teacher pay raise approved by Mississippi Senate

JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - The Mississippi Senate has passed a pay hike for teachers, teacher assistants, librarians and counselors. The vote was unanimous.

The office of lieutenant governor says more than 35,000 educators would see another $1,000 if the bill becomes law.

The raise would be for $500 a year for two years. Senators amended the language to pay the raise to teachers at one time as a bonus.

The average teacher salary in Mississippi is $44,925, according to the Mississippi Department of Education.

Senate Bill 2770, by Senate Education Chairman Gray Tollison, R-Oxford, heads to the House for consideration.
