Queen City holds first paddle race

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian's first paddle board race was held Saturday at Bonita Lakes.

The event consisted of a 3 mile and a 6 mile race for adults and a 1 mile race for kids.

Paddlers were able to race with kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards. Organizers say this is a great event because it's to benefit Hope Village for Children.

“It’s so wonderful to get out on the water with your friends. Everything stops and your problem stops. It’s just peaceful and it’s a great workout,” said paddle race participant Casey Griffith.

“I’m really excited because we usually would have to go to the Gulf Coast to do these races which is several hundred miles. Now it’s only 70 miles and we’re really excited,” said paddle race participant John Collier.

Event organizer Jonathan Dickerson says his goal is to make this an annual event for Meridian.
