MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Michael Guest and Whit Hughes will appear On the Record Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on WTOK-TV. The two are in a Republican runoff for Mississippi's third district congressional seat.
Current Cong. Gregg Harper is retiring from the House of Representatives after his term ends, leaving the seat open.
Hughes has challenged Guest to a runoff debate. But Guest says the two have already had plenty of head to head meetings.
"I'm very disappointed that he's not willing to do a debate," said Hughes. "I can't imagine how you want to tell people that you want to go to Washington, D.C. and be a strong leader and fight for them and go toe to toe with liberal leadership on Capitol Hill if you won't do a single debate in a runoff."
"I believe that we've had ample opportunity for the citizens and the voters to be able to distinguish my record and what I stand from my opponent," said Guest. "We have gladly participated in those dozens debates and we believe that a dozen is enough."
Guest and Hughes placed first and second in a 6-candidate field in the June 5 primary. No one received the required fifty percent plus one majority, making the runoff necessary to choose the Republican nominee.
