MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The holiday season is one of the busiest travel times of the year and Christmas road trips can be expensive. According to Gasbuddy.com, the average price of a gallon of gas this Christmas will likely be the highest it's been since Christmas 2013. The national average is $2.39 a gallon. That's 11 cents higher than last year, but a 12 cent drop since Thanksgiving.
In Meridian, some stations are selling gas at under two bucks a gallon. Holiday travelers we talked to say the cheaper gas prices in East Mississippi put them in the Christmas spirit!
"I like it. It really helps make traveling a little bit more easier for the holidays," traveler Erin Baxter said.
We talked to two college students headed home for the Christmas Break. They tell us they spent a" lot" more money filling up their tanks back at school compared to refueling in the Queen City
"Yea it's about $35 to fill up my car. I just filled up for $25. So $35-$40 up there. $25 here," Logan Miller said.
"Like 15-20. Just depends. So not too bad. I have a little car. But yea this is probably the cheapest that it's cost me all trip," Aubrie McFall said.
Drivers are topping off their tanks in the Twin States and are saving money on their holiday road trips.
"Oh yea. It's going to help me with a little bit of more money before I get there too. I get decent gas mileage so I can get there on a tank of gas. So hopefully gas won't be too expensive in that big city," Miller said.
Triple A says about 100 "million" drivers will hit the road between now and New Year's Eve. According to Trip Advisor's Annual Holiday Survey, there is an expected 9% increase in holiday travel this year. 45% of people are traveling for Christmas, that’s up 6% from last year. December 23 is expected be the busiest travel day with 11% taking to the highways and airways.
