DEMOPOLIS, Ala. (WTOK) - Plans are being made to remember two students who died tragically Friday in Demopolis.
Rayshawn Benison and Natasia Daniels were both members of the high school's marching band. They and a third friend fell in to the Tombigbee River after school Friday. One person was rescued but Rayshawn and Natasia drowned.
District superintendent, Kyle Kallhoff, said Monday that students are planning a candlelight vigil for Rayshawn and Natasia, which will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at Demopolis High School, in the parking lot west of the football stadium, where the band practices.
Counselors and pastors have been available through the weekend as the community has drawn together. Counselors will also be available Tuesday as students return to class. Monday (Columbus Day) was a scheduled professional development day for teachers.
Demopolis City Schools superintendent, Kyle Kallhoff, released a statement Monday:
"On Friday afternoon after school was released, several high school students went to the Demopolis City Landing. Tragically, two Demopolis High School students drowned in the Tombigbee River. The Demopolis High School family and entire Demopolis City School System express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the students.
Monday is a scheduled day out of school for students, however, additional counselors will be available Tuesday when our students return to school. We ask that you continue to pray for the families, friends and loved ones of the students we lost."
