US Naval Academy looking for summer program applicants

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (WTOK) - The United States Naval Academy is recruiting students for its summer programs.

"We have all these computers over here with high speed connections. We're going to put interested students on the computer, give them the information they need and they can actually fill out an application. It takes about 20 minutes,” says Blue and Gold Officer David Carter.

Carter works with local schools to bring in students. He says the program has plenty to offer.

"For the rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders, we have the summer STEM program: science, technology, engineering, and math. And for the rising seniors we have what is called the Summer Leadership Seminar. Both of these programs are a week long in June. There's three different sessions,” says Carter.

Carter describes the ideal applicant for the Summer Leadership Seminar.

"I’m working with one young man who is an Eagle Scout, elected mayor of Boy’s State and is captain of the football team. These are the kind of people we want. They're into athletics. They're well-rounded,” says Carter.

Carter says he encourages anyone, male or female, to come out to the Neshoba County Library Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to sign up.
