LIVINGSTON, Ala. (WTOK) -- The University Charter School on the University of West Alabama campus in Livingston is gearing up for its second year.

UCS is a public charter school which opened in August 2018, serving grades pre-K through 8. The vision of the school is to become a model that provides a strong education to those in rural areas.

UWA President Dr. Ken Tucker says the school exceeded all expectations in its first year.

"We are so excited about the performance of the charter school this first year. It was a risk. It was a very bold move, but our feeling all along was this would be transformative for our area and it has really started off on such a positive note. We've gotten tremendous, positive nationwide exposure."

Dr. Tucker added that UCS had a five year goal of exceeding state academic averages, and they did that in only one year.
