Victim's name released in city's first homicide

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The name of the victim in the fatal Jan. 13 shooting in Meridian has been released.

Meridian police say 30-year-old Tatanisha Berry was shot and killed at America's Best Value Inn.

The suspect, James Starks, was also arrested recently for stalking Berry.

The MPD says Berry went to the police department Jan. 4 to file charges against Starks for choking her. Detectives say these charges, along with the evidence, were presented to a city judge for a warrant to be signed.
But the judge found insufficient evidence to sign the felony warrants. Starks was released on his own recognizance for the stalking charge on Friday, Jan. 10. The shooting took place early Monday morning.

Police said they were waiting on more evidence in the domestic violence aggravated assault case and were working with the victim before her death.
