LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - Authorities are releasing the name of the victim in Saturday's shooting death in Lauderdale County.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says 40-year-old Gracie Moss Lebron was killed by 36-year-old Gregory Freeman at a home on Old Homestead Rd.
“A neighbor next door to us was sitting on the porch and heard three shots,” resident Carolyn Starnes says.
“She had been shot multiple times. She was taken to a local emergency room where she later died as a result of her injuries,” Calhoun says.
Calhoun says investigators gathered witness statements and were able to quickly finger 36-year-old Gregory Freeman as the shooter.
“We were able to make the determination that he possibly fled on Highway 45 going northbound. Based on that, agencies were contacted along the way,” Calhoun says.
For people in the neighborhood, the shooting death comes as an unwelcome surprise.
“It’s a good place to be. We have been here a little over 30 years,” Starnes explains
Carolyn Starnes lives down the street from where the shooting took place.
“For something like this to happen, we know it may be an isolated incident, but it still upsets a neighborhood that prides itself on being a good, calm, quiet neighborhood,” Starnes says.
Starnes says she didn’t know the victim or the suspect, but says she has seen several children at that home.
“So early in the morning there shouldn’t have been anything volatile going on and there were children there. It was extremely upsetting,”
Authorities were able to arrest Gregory Freeman in Lee County. Agencies used spike strips to disable this maroon SUV Freeman was driving. He’s now back in Lauderdale County to face charges.
