MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The deadline to be registered to participate in the March primaries is Monday.
Being able to vote is one of the most important rights and responsibilities that U.S. citizens have. A local man from Zambia, Africa, has been living in America for 17 years. He became a citizen this year, and raised his voice Saturday by registering to vote. He told us why it's vital to register to vote.
"I think it's very important because sometimes I'll hear people complaining about things. I would ask them, did you vote? They would tell me, no and that's the problem. If you have somebody that expresses your views and your beliefs, then you have a representative that can probably make it happen," says local citizen Mwananono Lewanika.
Lewanika says he is living the American dream.
Circuit clerk offices are open till 5 p.m. Monday.
