City of Meridian holds coronavirus press conference

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian Mayor Percy Bland held a news conference Tuesday afternoon to announce his intentions to sign an executive order.

Bland says the city of Meridian will move to essential services and restrict how some businesses operate as of 5 pm. Friday, Mar. 27.

The order defines 'essential businesses' as hospitals, nursing homes, health clinics, drug stores, pharmacies, banks, grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, military installations, security and emergency response operations. There are a host of other businesses deemed essential like daycare centers and veterinary clinics.

For non-essential businesses, there will be a strict limit of no more than 10 people. Funerals are directed to have no more than 50 people.

Bland says he has not yet signed this order because of the fluidity of the situation and that this will be the plan if Gov. Tate Reeves doesn’t make an overall decision for the entire state by Friday.

The mayor says some of his order could change before Friday, but he will send out final copies to the media.
