Candidate for sheriff denied pardon for drug conviction

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Ala. (WTOK) - Newscenter 11 has an update on a story about a candidate in the Choctaw County, Ala., sheriff's race.

Ricky Hearn, who was convicted of a drug crime 14 years ago, qualified to run as a Democrat.

Last week, Hearn sought a pardon from the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles but was denied. Because the conviction stands, if Hearn is elected sheriff, he would not be able to carry a gun.

Hearn has agreed to talk with Newscenter 11 early next week. Hearn says he'll share why he believes he can legally seek the office of sheriff, and how he plans to handle not being able to carry a gun, if elected.
