MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - One person is dead and another charged with murder in an incident that happened Tuesday night in Meridian.
Police say 42-year-old Michael Portis is charged with the murder of his 37-year-old girlfriend, Miranda Allen. Investigators say Portis and the victim were in a dispute that led to Portis assaulting Miranda Allen. Chief Benny Dubose says the woman died at a local hospital after Portis dropped her off.
"We feel like we have enough information based on statements that we got from other individuals to charge him with murder," Dubose says.
"She had quite a few bruises and lacerations covering her body. We do have what we think is a crime scene at one of the local motels where they were staying," Dubose says.
Dubose says it’s not entirely clear where the actual crime occurred. He says the couple were staying at the motel while they were waiting on rental property. Although he has not confessed to the crime, investigators say they are confident enough to charge Portis.
This is Meridian’s ninth homicide this year. Dubose says police could not have prevented this incident.
“It’s a case of individuals being familiar with each other and having some type of conflict and one of them choosing to resolve that conflict in a manner that’s not appropriate,” Dubose says.
Portis is currently in jail with a $500,000 bond.
