Lady Knights, Newton County boys advance to soccer state championship

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) The West Lauderdale Lady Knights entered Monday's matchup against the Newton County Lady Cougars knowing they were one win away from making it back to a state championship.

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Knights entered the second half with newfound energy. Senior defender Railey Mayatt netted two goals within four minutes of each other to get the Lady Knights started.

In the 66th minute, Alice Williamson netted the Lady Knight's third goal of the night off an assist from Anna Claire Nance. Then to cap off the evening, Lucy Green added another goal only a minute later that came soaring all the way from midfield.

The final score from C.D. Smith field at Meridian Community College was 4-0 West Lauderdale over Newton County. After shaking hands, the Lady Knights ran towards their stands to wave to fans before head coach Alex George ran over, huddle the girls together and screamed 'we're going to state!".

The Lady Knights will look to capture their fourth state title in five seasons on Saturday. They will face the winner of Tuesday's Vancleave-Florence matchup.

Newton County boys soccer also will compete for a state championship in 4A on Saturday, facing the winner of Tuesday's Florence-St. Stanislaus game.

The Cougars defeated Ripley 3-2 on Monday despite being down 2-0 at halftime. Junior forward Lee Hill scored the first of three second-half goals to help lead the Cougars to victory.

Both the Lady Knights and Cougars will be competing for a state championship at Brandon High school on Saturday, beginning with the girls at noon following with the boys at 2 pm.
