JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian Wildcats fell in the MHSAA Boys 6A Championship game to Starkville, 61-46, in the Mississippi Coliseum Saturday night. Both teams were tied at nine heading into the second quarter but the Yellow Jackets led by seven at the halftime break. The Wildcats had trouble shooting from the field during the first half – converting on just one of their twelve three-pointer attempts and 28 percent overall.
In the third quarter, Meridian fell behind by as many as 15 points, however, the team went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter. The Wildcats pulled within with two points with just over five and half minutes remaining in regulation but were outscored 19 to 6 during the closing minutes of the game. The Wildcats never led in the Championship game.
Meridian was making its third consecutive appearance in the state title game and was seeking its second championship in three years. Meridian finishes the season with a 26-5 record. Starkville’s title caps a 30-1 season.
