Mississippi State falls short in Elite Eight matchup with Oregon

PORTLAND, Oreg. -- For the first time since 2016, the Mississippi State women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end before the calendar turned to April.

MSU fell in a back and forth contest with the Oregon Ducks on Sunday afternoon, 88-84, just one game short of returning to the final four for a third consecutive season. The game was tied at 59-59 entering the fourth quarter before the Ducks pulled ahead late to seal the victory. Bulldogs end the year with a record of 33-3, with two of those losses coming against Oregon.

Teaira McCowan led Mississippi State in scoring, dropping 19 points with 15 rebounds in the loss. Anriel Howard chipped in 18 points with 6 rebounds. All five MSU starters scored in double digits.

Sabrina Ionescu led Oregon with game-high 31 points, with 8 assists and 7 rebounds in the victory.
