JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - The Newton Lady Tigers capped a 29-2 season with a 39-33 win over West Lincoln Friday at the Mississippi Coliseum, claiming the Class 2A girls basketball title.
Newton buckled down defensively – holding the Lady Bears to just four points in the first quarter and 25% shooting overall in the first half. The Lady Tigers also converted 17 points off of 17 Lincoln turnovers and edged the Lady Bears in points in the paint, 34 to 8.
Newton senior Nia McCalphia chipped in 12 points and was named the CSPIRE Player of the Game while West Lincoln senior Katelyn Dickerson posted a game-high 17 points in the losing event.
The championship is the first for the program since 2010.
