NEWTON, Miss. - (WTOK) It's nowhere but up for Newton football this season as they try to rebound after coach Zach Grady's first year saw the Tigers winless.
Being part of Class 2A District 4 doesn't make it any easier- with the likes of state champs Scott Central and playoff teams Philadelphia, Union and Lake. Newton's 10 opponents had a combined record of 94-52 last season
The Tigers have last year erased from their memory, and they're entrenched in summer workouts, with practice just a calendar turn away.
"Well any time you're building a program you want your guys to mimic the routine and role of the head coach," said Grady.
"We have a system in place that pretty much implements the things that we keep ourselves grounded in, so we just want our guys to bind to the system and it'll take care of itself, one game at a time."
Newton has some solid leadership back in junior receiver/linebacker Kobe Thompson and senior linebacker/tackle Anthony Smith.
The Tigers open the season at home vs Morton, August 23.
