There is so much to like about Drew Brees. He wears jersey #9 in honor of Boston Red Sox great Ted Williams, and that in itself should be an endorsement for greatness. Williams was everybody’s hero, even John Wayne’s. Brees achieved a couple of feats Sunday in the Saints’ 24-23 win over Baltimore. He joined the 500 club in touchdown passes as he threw TD passes 500 and 501. It was also his first win over the Baltimore Ravens. Brees as a starting quarterback has now beaten all 32 NFL teams --only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning have done the same. Brees beat the Saints when he was in San Diego and beat the Chargers as a Saint. Next up for the 5-1 Saints is a game in Minnesota. All of us Saints fans remember the last time these teams met and the terrible outcome last January.

Sanderson Farms Championship

The 51stSanderson Farms Championship is set for this week at the The Country Club of Jackson. A field of 132 players includes defending champion Ryan Armour plus eight other past champions. This year’s golf tournament will have a record $4.4 million purse. Since 1994 Century Club Charities has donated $13.5 million to Mississippi charities through the golf tournament. Most of the donations go to the Batson Children’s Hospital. Sanderson Farms CEO Joe Sanderson will tell you his aim for sponsoring the tournament in one simple quote: “Helping those kids.” The Pro-Am in the past couple of years has attracted the likes of Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Wesley Walls, Sean Payton and Paul Maholm, to name a few. World Series

For the first time in 102 years the Dodgers and the Red Sox will tie up in the World Series. The year was 1916 when they played at Braves Field in Boston instead of the smaller Fenway Park. Babe Ruth was a pitcher for the Red Sox and actually pitched a 2-1 win in game two by going all 14 innings. The 21-year-old Babe was also hitless that day, but the Sox won that series in five games. At that time the Dodgers were called the Brooklyn Robins. The Dodgers are led by former USM baseball star Brian Dozier while the Red Sox are led by former MSU great Mitch Moreland. The Red Sox are rated a slight favorite. Every game will be aired on Fox beginning this Tuesday at 7:09 p.m.

Rebels, Dogs, Eagles

Ole Miss and Mississippi State had some offensive troubles this past weekend in losses to Auburn and LSU, respectively. USM found a ground game after several changes on the offensive line and with the emergence of freshman tailback Trivenskey Mosley as he rushed for 142 yards in the Golden Eagles’ Homecoming win over UTSA, 27-17.

JUCO Playoffs

The Mississippi JUCO is in its final week of the regular season. Jones won the South Division, and East Mississippi claimed the top spot in the North. Jones will host the winner of this week’s Northwest-Itawamba contest on November 3 while the East Mississippi Lions will host Co-Lin on that date.

Minshew in Heisman talk

Brandon native Gardner Minshew threw four touchdown passes as Washington State upset Oregon, 34-20, Saturday night. Minshew, who had a 4.0 GPA and recorded a 30 on the ACT at Brandon High, was overlooked by the Division 1 schools in the South. He is now on the Heisman Trophy radar after leading the Cougars to a No. 13 ranking in the latest Associated Press poll.
