Southern Miss lands three on All-Conference USA First Team

Conference USA announced its 2017 All-Conference football teams today, as selected by the league’s 14 head football coaches. Twelve of the 14 schools placed at least one player on the first team, with C-USA Champion Florida Atlantic producing a league-high seven selections, followed by Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss with three apiece. Florida Atlantic and Marshall each had the most combined first and second-team members with eight, followed by Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss with six.

Florida Atlantic’s seven first-team selections include four from the league’s top scoring offense and three from defense. Highlighting the Owls players are sophomore RB Devin “Motor” Singletary (1,796 rushing yards, nation-leading and C-USA-record-tying 29 rushing and 303 total touchdowns) and three of the offensive linemen that have paved the way for Singletary in junior Reggie Bain and seniors Roman Fernandez and Antonyo Woods. FAU is the first school in C-USA history to have three offensive linemen earn first team honors in the same season,

The three honorees produced by Louisiana Tech include a pair of defensive standouts in junior DE Jaylon Ferguson (38 tackles, six sacks and 10 quarterback hurries) and senior DB Secdrick Cooper (63 tackles and two interceptions), along with graduate student snapper Cameron Linck.

A pair of skill position standouts and a special teams star comprise the Marshall All-Conference choices. Senior TE Ryan Yurachek (47 receptions and a league-leading nine TDs among tight ends) and impact newcomer junior WR Tyre Brady (56 catches for 777 yards and six scores) are joined by senior P Kaare Vedvik (league-high 44.4 average with 23 punts inside the 20-yard line) make up the Thundering Herd’s selections.

Two of Old Dominion’s three first teamers are found on the Monarchs special teams units. Junior KR Isaiah Harper leads C-USA and ranks eighth nationally with a 29.1 yard kickoff return average with three touchdowns, while sophomore PR Darrell Brown has a league-high 8.4 yard average per punt return. Junior DL Oshane Ximines (tied for second in C-USA with 8.5 sacks) also earned a spot.

Southern Miss saw a pair of skill position stars and its placekicker earn spots on the squad. Senior RB Ito Smith (1,730 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns), junior WR Korey Robertson (league-highs of 1,070 receiving yards and 11 TD catches) and senior K Parker Shaunfield (17-of-20 field goals and 41-of-42 on PATs for 92 points) encompass the Golden Eagles honorees.

Rice and WKU both placed two members of their teams on the all-league first team list. Owls senior DE Brian Womac (league-highs of 10 sacks and 22 tackles for loss) and senior LB Emmanuel Ellerbee (120 tackles, second-most in C-USA)are listed along with Hilltoppers senior OL Brandon Ray and junior LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe (104 tackles, 9 TFL’s).

FIU, North Texas, UAB, UTEP and UTSA each produced one first team selection. FIU is represented by senior WR Thomas Owens, who had a league-best average of 98.6 yards per game with 887 yards and six touchdowns in nine games. North Texas has the league’s first team quarterback in sophomore Mason Fine (294-of-457 for 3,749 and a school-record 28 touchdown passes). UAB lists DB Darious Williams (49 tackles, five interceptions and a league-high 15 pass breakups) and UTEP lists 2016 All-American and 2017 Midseason All-American senior OL Will Hernandez. UTSA placed senior DE Marcus Davenport (55 tackles with 8.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss – both second in the league) on the first team unit.

Marshall had the most second-team designations with five, while FIU had four and Louisiana Tech, North Texas and Southern Miss all produced five.

The league’s individual awards will be released Wednesday, December 6. Conference USA will conclude the 2017 season by sending a league-record ninie teams to bowl games.
