MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Eight hundred forty-four athletes from across Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana will descend upon Meridian this weekend to take place in the USATF Region 6 Jr. Olympics Track & Field Championships. The top five finishers – male and female from each division – will go on to compete in the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Sacramento later this month. This meet follows the Southern Association District Championship (Mississippi and Louisiana) that also took place at Ray Stadium during the end of June.

Southern Association President, Jackie Callender Sr., says Meridian High School has been a good host for the two regional events.

“We’re enjoying ourselves. This has been great for both sides,” Callender said. “We hope someday we’re back again with this type of thing and the hospitality has been great. There’s been very little if anything to complain about. Mother Nature – no one controls that. But the facility, the city has opened its arm, they’ve reached out to anything we could have asked for and then some so we’re thankful.”

The four day competition begins Thursday with the combined track and field events: the boys’ decathlon (10 events) and the girls’ heptathlon (seven events). Combined events compile individual events such as the 110 meter hurdles, the shot put and the long high jump. The regular competition, which includes the speed events such as the 100 meter dash, begins Saturday and concludes Sunday.
