What They Said: 2019 Football Media Day

STARKVILLE, Miss. With just 21 days until the 2019 football season kicks off, Mississippi State held its annual media day Saturday afternoon at the Leo M. Seal Football Complex.

The Bulldogs began the day with their official team photo in Davis Wade Stadium before coaches and players met with the media in advance of the first scrimmage of preseason camp.

Head coach Joe Moorhead, associate head coach and tight ends coach Tony Hughes, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Bob Shoop and special teams coordinator Joey Jones each took the podium.

Joe Moorhead:
"Eight days into camp and I think we have been progressing nicely," Moorhead said. "Scrimmage number one is this evening and it is a great opportunity to get out on the field without all of the coaches [on the field] and let the kids play and compete and have some opportunity to evaluate."

Tony Hughes:
"We're looking forward to doing some great things," Hughes said. "I'm excited about being back and being a part of the Mississippi State football family after being away for three years. [I'm excited about] Getting back into the SEC which is a very tough and demanding league and taking the experiences I have had in the past as a head coach – bringing those things back and being able to assist Coach Moorhead in any role that he sees fit besides coaching the tight ends and working on the offensive side of the ball."

Bob Shoop:
"There's a standard of play when you're at Mississippi State with regards to defense," Shoop said. "It was here long before I was here. We hope to continue that standard of play. The names and the faces may get a little different, but the standard remains the same."

Joey Jones:
"We're excited about this football season special teams wise," Jones said. "As you know, I think we started two freshmen and a sophomore last year in the specialists department, so all of those guys are coming back. I'm really excited about where they are right now. There is always a lot of improvement from your freshman year to your sophomore year. We're looking for a lot of improvement in those guys."

Several players also met with the media (click here for transcript) including linebacker Erroll Thompson, center Darryl Williams, cornerback Cameron Dantzler, wide receiver JaVonta Payton, quarterback Keytaon Thompson, quarterback Tommy Stevens, defensive end Chauncey Rivers and safety Jaquarius Landrews.

State will open the 2019 season on Aug. 31 against Louisiana in New Orleans.
