Wildfire Smoke Drifts Across State Lines

The Meridian area and others in Mississippi and Alabama are seeing the effects of major wildfires that have hit south Georgia and north Florida.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement on Monday, saying smoky conditions in southeast Mississippi will reduce visibility anywhere from two to five miles.

The visibility will be especially bad late at night when the smoke becomes mixed with fog.

Forecasters advise people with respiratory ailments to stay indoors as much as possible through Tuesday.

The wildfire that raced through the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia and into Florida has burned over 102,000 acres in Florida. It was started by lightning more than a week ago.
